What is the P.A.V.

The Pontifical Academy for Life, founded by Pope John Paul II, exists for the promotion and defense of human life, especially regarding bioethics as it regards Christian morality. Its statute was defined by the motu proprio Vitae Mysterium of Pope John Paul II on 11 February 1994.

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., has been elected as Supreme Pontiff, the 265th successor of Peter, and has chosen the name Francis. He is the first Latin American Pope, the first Jesuit Pope, and the first “Francis” in the pontificate.

Rev. Bochatey consecrated bishop on March 9, 2013

Pontifical Academy Corresponding Member, Rev. Alberto Germán Bochatey, O.S.A., was nominated Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of La Plata (Argentina).

On April 10-13, 2013, The European Centre for Teaching and Research in Ethics organizes in Strasbourg (France) an International Symposium on Ethics Ethical challenges of disability.

General Assembly 2013

On February 21-23, 2013, Pontifical Academy gathered in Vatican for new General Assembly. Several reflexions were offered, focusing on how the Christian message regarding human life needs to be put in practice in our times - in various different medical, social and curative circumstances.

Dr. Evelyn Billings deceased on February 16, 2013

After a short illness, Dr. Evelyn Billings (aged 95), world-renowned pioneer of natural fertility regulation and Member Emeritus of the Pontifical Academy for Life, passed away.

New Spanish National Bioethics Committee Members

Prof. José Miguel Serrano Ruiz-Calderón e Prof. Vicente Bellver Capella have been nominated members of the Spanish National Bioethics Committee.

The Cardinal Nomination of Willem J. Eijk

His Holiness Benedict XVI created Cardinal H. Em. Rev. Msgr Willem Jacobus Eijk along with 21 new members of the College of Cardinals last February (2012). His Eminence is Archbishop of Utrecht (Netherlands) and Ordinary Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life.

2012 Corresponding Members

On February 25th, 2012, the Governing Council of the Pontifical Academy for Life introduced 15 new Corresponding Members.
